Press Release 07 December 2015

Launch of the Electronic Cheque (e-Cheque) Service

The Hong Kong Association of Banks (HKAB) welcomes today's launch of the e-Cheque service.

From today, customers can issue e-Cheques through the internet banking platform and/or mobile banking platform of their banks1, while all banks will accept deposit of e-Cheques through the internet banking platform, mobile banking platform and/or the e-Cheque Drop Box service provided by Hong Kong Interbank Clearing Limited.

e-Cheques provide an efficient and convenient alternative for bank customers to make and receive payments in addition to paper cheques and other payment methods. Stringent measures have been put in place to ensure the security of the process, such as the use of recognized digital certificates to ensure the authenticity, integrity and non-repudiation of e-Cheques. More information on e-Cheques can be found in the attached brochure jointly developed by HKAB and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA).

HKAB set up a dedicated Taskforce on e-Cheques in 2013 to study and refine the details on implementation. This has enabled banks to prepare for the service launch and facilitated the industry's efforts to support the HKMA in driving towards a comprehensive and innovative payment infrastructure in Hong Kong.

Helen Wong, Chairperson of HKAB, said "The e-Cheque service offers an environmentally-friendly and cost-effective solution to enterprises and the public for handling payments. This safe and efficient means of conducting transactions will further enhance the competitiveness of banking services in Hong Kong by expanding the payment service channels available to meet the different needs of customers. The Association believes that the launch of the e-Cheque service will benefit the overall development of the banking sector in Hong Kong and further reinforce Hong Kong's status as an international financial centre. I would like to congratulate the industry and thank all the e-Cheque Taskforce members and related parties for their hard work over two years and their contribution to the successful launch of the e-Cheque service today."
